Mardi Himal Base Camp (MHBC) is a newly opened trekking-destination in the Annapurna region, and, thus very few travelers make their journey to MHBC that deserves enticing potentiality to be a unique substitute to the other popular areas. Situated to the eastern part of prevalent Annapurna Base Camp, the summit of Mardi Himal abruptly towers up to the south-west face of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) that offers a real exquisite destination to each of holiday makers. Moreover, the trek is rather suitable and treasurable one for those who have short vacation but are enthusiastic to make adventurous trips within a limited time in the Himalayas.

The trekking trail to Mardi Himal Base Camp winds through mix-valleys, alpine meadows, picturesque villages, and bewitching forest of rhododendron, pine and maple trees accompanied by exciting and incredible views of Himalayas and panoramic landscape. Especially the handy view of Mt. Fishtail, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal is phenomenal when one reaches at the highest point of this trip.

The trekking route to Mardi Himal Base Camp is not well developed. There are only simple guesthouses and home-stays in the route and one must be easy going in few stops to share room with friends. We have to adjust in guesthouses with no attached/private bathroom and there are very few choices of food item as well (non-veg items are not readily available; if preferred, we would like you to inform us while booking the trek). This trek must be booked at least 3 months prior to your arrival in Nepal so as to reserve lodges or guesthouses on time. At some points, we may have to carry pack lunch and enough water because there are no teashops or groceries on the way before reaching the overnight stop.

[Day 02] Kathmandu
Get finally prepared for your adventurous journey to Mardi Himal Base Camp (MHBC). Meanwhile, we obtain necessary permits. We can organize interested trip on request.

[DAY 03] Kathmandu-Pokhara drive in a Tourist Bus (7-8 hours)
The overland coach-journey to Pokhara goes through River Valley (Trishuli River, Seti River and Marsyangdi River), farming land (mostly rice and millet field) and picturesque villages along with glances of Himalayas and mountain-cliff. Everyone enjoys the scenic drive to Pokhara. As we reach Pokhara Bus Park, we board in our standby car/van/jeep/bus depending on group size and move to our pre-booked hotel (2 Star) located in lakeside (the main tourist town). We check-in at the hotel and get refreshed. We will have dinner in a restaurant situated in lakeside.

[DAY 04] Drive to Kande (1570m), trek to Deurali at 2100m via Australian Camp/Thulo Kharka (2232m)

Together with Trekking Guide and Porters, we will board in reserved vehicles and commence scenic drive on black topped Pokhara-Beni High Way passing through Tibetan refugee camp and paddy field alongside the Seti River. After 20 minutes of drive, we will reach at Phedi (the alternative trek start point to ABC or Mardi Himal BC). From there our overland journey ascends on twisted road. We will stop in Naudanda (1460m) to capture Annapurnas/Manaslu range and Pokhara Valley accompanied by World Peace Pagoda and alpine lakes: Phewa Tal, Begnas Tal and Rupa Tal.

We will resume the scenic drive to Kande 1570m, and commence trek to Australian Camp 2232m (Thulo Kharka) for 2 hours. The trail ascends through closely bordered houses and the field of millet, wheat and rice. We will have Lunch at Australian Camp in company with outstanding views of Annapurna Himalayan Peaks and valleys, and, soon after lunch; we resume rest of the day’s trek. Hence, the trekking trail is well maintained in this part, it takes half an hour to reach permit check-point, Pothana. After governmental formalities in the checkpoint, the trek continues on to a pass at 2100m named Deurali, where the charisma of Annapurna South reveals. We spend the night in a guesthouse.

[DAY 05] Trek to Forest Camp 2600m, overnight stay in a guesthouse (5-6 hours)
The day starts soon after breakfast. As the day’s trek winds through forest of pine and rhododendron trees, we may have to carry necessary water and pack-lunch. The trail gently ascends leaving behind one of routes to ABC (Annapurna Base Camp), Copra Ridge and Poon Hill treks. The trail is gradually ups and downs but mostly forested and it is easier and interesting to walk with frequent glimpses of mountain views; overnight stay in a guesthouse.

[DAY 06] Trek to Low Camp 2950m (3-4 hours of walk)
We start the day after breakfast as usual. Leaving behind the Forest Camp, the trail steeply climbs through the jungle of rhododendron trees. The day’s trek heads following the ridges. On our way, we should be careful as the trail traverses over scarcely exposed roots of trees plus rocks are everywhere, but it is interesting to capture them in our camera. As we continue the ascent, we can see glaciers of Annapurna south in a distance. When we navigate the forest, we reach at Low Camp and check-in at a simple lodge. The close up views of the Mt. Fishtail, Mt. Mardi Himal, mountain cliffs and ridges with open sky from here are amazing.

[DAY 07] Trek to High Camp 3700m (3-4 hours of walk)
The day’s trek goes with steep ascent towards the Mt. Mardi Himal and Mt. Fishtail through mountain ridges. The way from Low Camp to High Camp is very steep and the trail itself is mostly the sequence of deep ravines in the alpine forest and thus we need to maintain our balance while heading up. After one and half hour of walk, we emerge into open part from the Jungle via Badale Danda (also known as Middle Camp). Leaving behind trees-line, we reach at alpine-bush area and meadows and can see an outstanding view of snow-capped mountain peaks: Annapurna South, Fishtail, Hiunchuli and so on. As we continue up our way, the ridge becomes narrow and thus we should be more careful to walk. Meantime, we can see panoramic landscape: to our left the Modi Khola Valley and pretty villages in the way to ABC whereas to the right - the valley made by the rivers of Mardi Khola and Seti. If the weather is clear, we get to see Pokhara Valley and Phewa Tal. Finally, we reach at a small pasture at 3700m that is, ‘High Camp’, the day’s stop. We check-in at a guesthouse.

[DAY 08] High Camp 3700m – rest for High Altitude Acclimatization
The trek in earlier days has limited scope for High Altitude Acclimatization because we will directly move between significant differences in elevation from High Camp 3700m to Mardi Himal Base Camp 4500m the next day. Hence, we will spend an extra day in High Camp. It is very important; especially for new journeyers to Himalayas, considering the need of perfect high altitude acclimatization for them. By this manner; our trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp can be safe, successful and more interesting. We make excursion in and around the High Camp for well acclimatization and return to the guesthouse in the afternoon. We should manage breakfast and Lunch for next day.

[DAY 09] Explore Mardi Himal Base Camp 4500m and return to Low Camp 2950m (8-9 hours)
The day’s trip heads with steep ascent and takes longer time than earlier days. Today, we should wake up early morning to start the day along the Mardi Himal Ridge up to the highest view-point of this trek at 4500m. From the view-point we can see sunrise over the uppermost part of Mt. Annapurna South whereas the Mt. Fishtail exposes straight above our head.

Hence, the trail becomes awry with rocky steps in some points, we must be well equipped before leaving the High Camp and highly alert while moving. We have to carry water, energy drink, together with breakfast and Lunch from High Camp. The days’ trip is really exciting but tough as well. The first part of ascent will take more than 2 hours to get into the base camp-I of Mardi Himal Ridge. Another 2 hours of climb takes us to the advance base camp and highest view point at 4500m. The charismatic view of Mardi Himal, Mt. Fishtail, Annapurna-I, Annapurna-III, Annapurna South and Gangapurna is unbelievable. We must be more alert and careful while returning to High Camp after the ultimate achievement. The retrace is also tough and challenging one. So, we shouldn’t lose our balance while descending to High Camp. The same day, we leave High Camp and retrace to Low Camp.

[DAY 10] Trek to the village of Siding 1750m (3-4 hours), drive to Pokhara
The return trek to Pokhara changes its route to the village of Siding at 1750m. Soon after we leave Low Camp, the trail winds with steep descent through forest to a shepherd’s hut. Past the hut, the trek descends to a hillside village called Siding situated a half of kilometer above from the valley. We will stop at Siding for lunch in a teahouse. Soon after lunch, we board in our standby reserved jeeps and drive to Pokhara, check-in at our hotel.
